Momiji always put himself aside for the happiness of others. He plays the role of the foolish traveler. He accepted that his mother needed to forget him to be happy. He accepted that his father needed to stop his violin lessons in order to preserve the happiness he worked to build. He accepted Tohru’s feelings for Kyo and tries to push Kyo forward. If Kyo’s curse was broken, Tohru would be happy.

But Momiji never identified with the traveler. He has admitted to loneliness. When Momiji’s curse breaks, he finally breaks free from the role. He chooses to leave Akito in order to pursue his own happiness. He doesn’t know what it is, but he knows he won’t gain it by giving any more of himself away.
